Due to competitive mobile internet packages, subscribers availing GSM-based internet services shown a tremendous growth of 161 percent by the end of June this year.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority's statistics were printed in the Daily Times, which reported that the number of internet subscriptions on different cellular networks reached 14.4 million by the end of closing financial year 2009-10; it was recorded at 4.4 million at the end of FY 2008-09.
Telenor grabbed the largest share in terms of number of mobile internet users; however, penetration-wise, Zong led the market with its lowest-cost internet service packs. Industry analysts said that the PTA may have overstated internet subscription numbers, since cellular subscribers do not often stay with one specific cellular network. They were, however, of the view that cellular operators' revenue saw a healthy increase from the usage of mobile Internet on GSM technology.
