Google Friend Connect

Google friend connect widgets allows any web master, within an hour or so, enhance his site with state of the art social features. The widget allows his current site Visitors or members, join the site, introduce* them self invite* their friends and engage* with each other.

I’m using “*” because it is done in a most interesting and innovative way:

Introduce  yourself:

Google has an holistic concept, which in my opinion that is where they are better than all the other. As far as they concern all the roads lead to Rome, which in that case Rome is YOU. Web 3 is about YOU and your friends. It is about small communities with same interests, same understanding, same vision.

From that little widget in your site, familiar with Google or not, Google allows your visitor to create a Google profile: It would look something like that: [http://google.com/profiles/your_google_user_name].

This profile page allows you to add links to your “sites” like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, EzineArticles, etc”.

It allows you tell about your self and allows people to contact you, not without saving your privacy.

Invite friends:

The widget allows you to invite your friends from all over the net: Your gmail contacts, your Orkut friends, your Facebook friends, plaxo etc” etc”.

Engage:

There are a few “social gadgets” you can use with your Google friend connect widget like adding a comment, adding a link to a video, rating an article or a game, site wall, polls, invite to events and  ilike. The list of gadgets you may use is growing from day to day. If I’m not wrong, the day you will be able to add 1000’s of gadgets to your site is very close. When Google thought of the open social platform, I’m quite sure, (now at least), that “Google Friend Connect” was on their mind.

That is not all:

Sharing/syndication: Any activity on the site is syndicated through plaxo, orkut and most important through your profile:

let us say that you have joined 15 sites using gfc. Now your activities will appear in your profile all over those sites, as well as you links, interests and so on.

Summary

As a web applications developer who is following the “open social”  evolution for about more than a year and a half, has an I Google gadget developer who has an Igoogle sand box account,  for that period of time as well and as web master/admin who has his own site/blog, I can say for sure that Google friend connect is the future. I didn’t even mention “Google Reader” which is part of it as well, but I’ll keep this for the next article.

Here is a link to a Google friend connect featured video, with a marketing orientation.…

Tech Gadgets For the Tech Generation

With technology dictating our lifestyle, tech gadgets are increasingly becoming integral part of our lives. The word, 'gadget' is considered to be used as a placeholder name for technical stuffs without a specific name. A tech-gadget is generally a technology product or object, which has got some specific functionality. Most often than not, this could be a brand new product or an innovative concept design.

These gadgets are also known as gizmos. When compared to other normal technological objects and stuffs, these are considered to be ingeniously designed and implemented. We could say that gadgets stand out from the rest of the pack.

Classifying gadgets is indeed an awkward job, since a gadget could have been anything and everything you could think of! On a rough note, tech gadgets could be electronic equipments, application software, accessories or enhancements, toys, mobile phones, gaming devices, etc. The introduction of a new gadget, to the market is bound to instill curiosity and excitment in the target audience.

Here, the instinctive characteristics of humans to feel crazy for unprecented functional novelties and odd design implementations are exploited to the full effect. A tech-gadget could be as advanced as a hi-tech robot or mobile phone; sometimes it could be as cool and simple as a grocery bag grip! On some occasions they are as useful as an advanced GPS device; on some other times they are as ridiculously as an electrically powered pencil sharpener.

Tech gadgets that seem useful to some people may not be useful to others. Some people may find a gadget so innovative and stylish that they want to try it as soon as it is available on the market, while some others may think that they are ridiculous and a waste of money! For most of the younger generation of people, tech-gadgets are part of their life and personal technology, and they can not even think about living without their beloved gizmos! …

Marketing Gadgets to Gals

The industry of consumer electronics has experience a popularity explosion due to our technology driven society. Often this industry is geared towards men and their tastes. But a shift is happening in the way companies are designing and marketing their electronics. Many have started to realize the long overdue idea of catering to the tastes of female consumers. The New York Times published an article by Michael Marriott discussing how many companies realize that most consumer electronics are bought for home use. Items such as camera's, computers and cell phones are now being designed and manufactured with the busy lives of women in mind.

An interesting pattern that I noticed throughout the article was the mention of "ease of use". Now, part of me hopes that this aspect of the marketing and design is just focusing on easy to use products for customers in general, as opposed to "dumbing down" products like remotes and digital cameras for women. It does seem to me that often times in the technology industry, it is assumed that a woman will not be able to understand the complicated use of a SLR digital camera because she is somehow easily flustered. Nancy Durante, chief executive of Durante Design, who was quoted in the article, believes there is a different reason, "Women are busier than men. great puzzle. Men get great gratification out of that. I'd rather read a book, "she says.

So how these companies are making an effort to appeal to female consumers? Well most importantly, they have shied away from simply "creating a pink or pastel version of the same black or silvery item coveted by men." They are making cameras smaller and more lightweight. Laptop carrying cases are more stylish. Many digital cameras have one-touch transferring to computers. Some notebook computers even come with the keys spaced further apart to accommodate the longer nails of female buyers. Another progressive marketing tool is to show the usability for both men and women. It is helpful to cater to both the sensitivity of women and the male love of technology. With top electronics companies taking notice to female consumers, now's a good time to be a gadget gal. …

Running Gear Review – Nike Plus Vs Garmin Forerunner 205-305 GPS

As a gadget and tech junkie, it was to my good fortune that my initiation into the world of distance running rough coincided with the appearance on the market of several new high-tech running gadgets: the Garmin Forerunner 205 and 305, and the Nike + system . I have used both the Garmin Forerunner 205 and Nike + for greater than 6 months each, and what follows is a review and comparison of my experiences with them.

The Nike + System
Back in 2007, I was just beginning my life as a runner, and I was looking for tools to help me progress. The Garmin Forerunner and Nike + systems both had instant appeal to my techie side, though I was initially hesitant to invest the several hundred dollars (at the time) needed to buy a Forerunner. I was also swept up in the excitation surrounding the introduction of the Nike + system, and my first pair of "real" running shoes were Nike + ready. Since I owned an Ipod Nano, and had shoes that could accommodate the little Nike + foot pod accelerometer internally, I decided to give Nike + a try. In the interest of full disclosure, I'll say at the outset that I no longer use the Nike +. However, that does not necessarily mean that I would not recommend it to anyone since it does have its benefits and uses. The Nike + certainly helped my running in those early days, and the motivation provided by the on-line Nike + challenges was great. I liked being able to gauge my pace, track distance, and record my runs on-line. But for a perfectionist like myself, the Nike + has some major drawbacks.

The most serious problem I had with the Nike + was that it was only really accurate if I ran at the same steady pace on every run, and stuck to more-or-less flat ground. Any deviation from the pace you calibrate it at messes up both the pacing data as well as the distance recording for your run, and at times I found these measurements to be quite far off. Now, for many runners this is not a big deal, but if you like to mix up your training and include things like interviews, tempo runs, and long, slow runs, the Nike + comes up way short. Furthermore, for me as a road racer, tenths of a mile and accurate pacing data matter a lot, so these shortcomings presented some major problems. That being said, I'm glad that I used it, and it did help a lot when I first started out. Even after I upgraded to the Garmin Forerunner 205, I did still continue to use Nike + for treadmill runs (this probably goes without saying, but GPS does not work on a treadmill). The Nike + recordings on a treadmill are accurate enough, and in my case are more accurate than the readout of my treadmill's own data console (it has never worked …

Electronics Industry Invests in Fashion Conscious Gadgets

While gadgets have traditionally been attractive because they do novel or impressive things, many gadgets these days are designed with thought put into how they look. This is true for mobile phones more so than any other type of gadget. For example, the Motorola Razr phone was as much of a fashion statement as it was a useful device. "Was" is the operative word when considering the Razr because it has recently gone out of style and the number of units of the model sold have plummeted. That's illustrative of one of the dangers of making electronic devices that are designed to satisfy the fickle notions of fashion that many people have. That said though, a lot of companies are doing it anyway. For example, LG electronics which is based out of South Korea has jumped onto the fashionable mobile phone bandwagon. LG- which has been known for producing low cost handsets in the past- has more recently collaborated with Prada to produce a handset that bears the Prada name. The Prada phone was developed with image in mind when it came to everything from the look of the actual phone to the icons that go on the screen to the ring tones and to the hard leather case and lint cloth that comes with it.

The Prada phone also has a fair amount of functionality built into it including the ability to take digital photographs. It also has touch screen features and can be used to surf the Internet. The Prada phone is also a multimedia device that can be used to listen to music, look at digital photos, and watch video.

Another venture into the fashion world of LG can be seen in its newer sliding phones. With these gadgets the screen on the phone slides up to reveal the keypad. In addition to being flashy, these phones have some practical benefits as well. The most obvious benefit of this design is the fact that it allows for a larger screen on a more compact device.

In addition to practical concerns, this device also has a fair amount of flair built into it as well. One model has a polished black casing, buttons that glow red, and a screen that becomes a mirror when it's turned off. There's another model that features a shiny metal casing along with similar features to the one mentioned above.

There are a number of problems associated with making phones that are stylish. One problem is economic in nature. Namely, because fashion trends are so fickle and change so quickly, a company that focuses on making fashionable electronic products could quickly see all of its efforts to go the way of the Razr phone if the winds of style blow the wrong way.

The other problem with fashionable electronic devices is that in many ways, achieving a certain look presents engineering problems. For example, polished metal is stylish these days, but metal does not allow mobile phones to transmit and receive signals as …

Wi-Fi Explained (Part 1)

About Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is known as Wireless Fidelity. Wi-Fi allows network connectivity through radio signals without the need for wires. "Wi-Fi Alliance" suggesting the term Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi term is also used as a synonym for any type of 802.11 networks.

About Radio Waves

Radio waves are the longest wavelength waves in the electromagnetic spectrum. The length ranges from the size of a football field to the size of a volley ball. Radio waves carry signals to your radio, TV, mobile, etc.

Access Point Defined

Access Point is the configured node on wireless local area network (WLAN). Access points act as a central receiver and transmitter of WLAN radio signals. Access points are dedicated hardware devices, which consist of antenna, radio transmitter, and built-in network adapter.

Hotspots Explained

Hotspot is an area serviced by an access point which allows Wi-Fi clients to connect to a network. Hotspots are those areas where Wi-Fi is provided on demand. Since Wi-Fi has gained acceptance in many businesses, homes, etc, and nowdays most of the laptops and electronic devices are having inbuilt Wi-Fi access devices; Wi-Fi can act as an alternative to a wired LAN. Places like airports, star hotels, cafés, etc, are the locations where Wi-Fi is available on demand. The places where Wi-Fi is available on demand or free are also known as hotspots.

Wi-Fi & Hotspots

The area covered by one or more interconnected Access Points is called a "Hotspot". The space range Hotspots can cover variants from as little as a single room with wireless-opaque walls or as much as many square miles covered by overlapping access points. Wi-Fi can also be used to create a mesh network. Wi-Fi allows connectivity in peer-to-peer mode, which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connection mode is useful in consumer gaming and electronics applications.

Certification Issue

When Wi-Fi technology was first commercialized, there were many problems regarding the interaction between different Wi-Fi gadgets. Then a community called "Wi-Fi Alliance" began to solve this issue, also addressed the needs of the end user, and allowed the technology to mature. The Alliance's "Wi-Fi Certified" stamp on Wi-Fi enabled gadgets assures consumers that the stamped products are interoperable amongst each other. Wi-Fi also enables wireless voice applications (VoWLAN or WVOIP). "Wi-Fi Certified" products interact among each other although their manufacturers are different. A "Wi-Fi" certified product can use any brand of access point with any other point of client hardware which is also "Wi-Fi" certified. Any "Wi-Fi" product will work with any non "Wi-Fi" certified product, if the latter uses the same radio frequency as the former.

SSID & its Purpose

Expansion of SSID is Service Set IDentifier. It is a code that attaches to all packages on a wireless network; only to identify each packet as part of that network. The code consists of case-sensitive alphanumeric characters. Wireless devices that attempt to communicate with each other must share the same SSID. The process of connecting a device to a specific wireless network through …
