Broken Links Detected

A broken link is a link that goes to a page or a picture or a video that no longer exists on the internet.

There are 2 main reasons why you do not want them in your website.

1. They are annoying and look unprofessional.

2. But more seriously, they can have serious consequences for the performance of your website in Google because Google penalises websites with broken links.

They do occur from time to time as websites that you have linked to close down, or they delete images or articles that you may have referred to.

Imagine that you were using Yellow Pages (remember what they were?) To find a business, and every second business you called was either closed or did not exist.

You would not be very happy and you would soon ditch the Yellow Pages.

Well, Google wants to protect it's position as the # 1 search engine in the world by only giving people hyperlinks that work, and so it views broken hyperlinks in your website very badly.

We are not sure how quickly the impact comes, or how many you can have before the penalties start. That probably changes all the time.

So you should be vigilant and always minimize the amount of them detected in your website.

How do I Know if I have Broken Links

Most good website software will send an email to your admin email address to notify you when you have them in your website. (Ours does!)

From there it is a few simple steps to:

  1. click on the link in the email
  2. review the link that is broken
  3. fix it or delete it

You will receive an email with the subject – [your website name] Broken links detected

At the bottom of the email is a link that says: You can see all links here

When you click on that link, you will be taken to a page in the admin area of your website where they all are listed.

For each website hyperlink that is not working, you have 4 options to select:

  • Edit URL
  • Unlink
  • Not broken
  • Dismiss

You should review each link and attempt to fix the link, but failing that, you should Unlink the link.

It is better to not have the link active, than to have an active link going nowhere.

Well, that is quite simple really!

What should you do now?

  1. Check that your website has no links broken.
  2. Fix or delete any that you do find.
  3. Do this regularly.

Internet Marketing Or Online Marketing – You're Having a Laugh

One entrepreneur says to another: "I've just been in the Far East prospecting for gold." "Japan?" requests the second entrepreneur. "Gosh, no," he replies. "I used much more scientific methods."

It's humor like this that makes the world go round and makes the long wait to make money on the internet worthy and let's face it, it is a long wait. I must spend an hour a day deleting emails promising some get rich system or new software designed to build your list up to 1,000,000 within a week! The latest, sorry, one of the latest I have received is promoting a well known flying insect method. Now I am not knocking this method but I do think they are targeting the wrong people among the right people if you know what I mean.

If you are just starting out, you need to find out how to build a web page, upload it to the web and drive traffic to it. Well I do anyway. I only started in January this year (2009) and I was struggling to find I found out how to do it properly.

From knowing nothing I now have 2 websites up and running. I can build my own site, upload it to the web and I am currently driving traffic to the sites and I admit this is the hardest bit. But perseverance pays off in the long run. All this since January. I started this article with an amusing (really!) Story, so let's end on the same note.

A guy was lost in the USA by the Washington Monument. He stopped a cop and asked, "What side is the State Department on?" The cop answered, "Ours, I hope."

Well I am on your side. The side of the "virgin" entrepreneur. So let's make a stand against the "fast buck" merchants. Set your goals, find one mentor and follow his teachings methodically and most of all stay focused. The success will come. …

Newer Mobile Phones May Eliminate Digital Cameras

Some of the most successful new gadgets are invariably the ones that combine the functions of other gadgets. The portable media player is a great example of this because it can be used to watch TV, listen to music, view digital photos, and in many cases even surf the Internet. Newer mobile phones have similar capabilities, and one of the things that mobile phones are getting better and better at doing is snapping digital photos. Historically, mobile phones with built in digital cameras have had photo sensors with less than one megapixel of resolution. That’s enough for a photo to look pretty good on the screen of a cell phone, but not nearly good enough to be worth printing out or emailing to someone who would be looking at it on any screen larger than that of another phone.

Now though, there are a lot of mobile phones on the market capable of taking pictures with resolutions of over three megapixels. Mobile phones that are capable of taking pictures in excess of three megapixels of resolution include the a990 made by Samsung, the N93i made by Nokia, Apple’s new iPhone, and the K90 Cybershot made by Sony Ericsson, to name just a few.

It used to be that three megapixels was a pretty impressive resolution for standalone cameras, and that’s one reason why the mobile phone is poised to replace standalone digital cameras. At least when it comes to taking snapshots to share with friends or even just to capture memories.

In fact, some digital photo enthusiasts believe that as mobile phones tat can take higher quality pictures become more mainstream, the digital camera as a separate device may go extinct. These experts point out the fact that many people who have mobile phones even now, don’t own wristwatches and think that we aren’t that far away from a world where younger people don’t even know what the word ‘camera’ means.

That seems a bit extreme though simply because it completely discounts that whole idea of SLR cameras. There are always going to be people out there who want more control over the pictures that they take than a simple point and shoot camera can give them, and that kind of control can’t be built into something as small as a mobile phone. On the other hand, ten years ago people probably would have said that it wasn’t possible to build the capabilities of a camera into a mobile phone at all!

Regardless of whether or not cameras have a future as standalone devices, it’s clear that they definitely have a future as part of mobile phones. Thats because there are a variety of services poised to capitalize on the trend. For example, one allows users to share photos with a set list of friends with just a few clicks of buttons on a phone. Another service will automatically upload photos to websites where they can be downloaded for up to twenty five cents a piece. One type of phone …

Why The Internet Is So Great!

The internet is a huge resource tool, accessible from everywhere in the world, with a huge library of information waiting to be viewed. It has a great advantage over other forms of research in that it is constantly updated, and more information is added daily, meaning it is the most up to date archive of media anywhere in the world. Using search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Lycos, web surfers can enter any criteria and be immediately provided with a vast list of possible matches, which can each be individually found to find the information required. It is therefore a great aid when doing research, as everything can be accessed at the touch of a button, or click of a mouse. Alternately, many organizations have their own home pages which surfers may already have the address to, and these can be viewed straight away, rather than having to search for them. When searching a particular subject, directories may be more suitable, so you can search within a certain topic, which will make the information gathered more relevant to the search. Directories are sites organized by a variety of academies, and they provide a collection of links to sites that are appropriate to the research are in question. The key to finding the information required using the internet is being concise and relevant.

However, not everything on the internet can be relied upon, especially where academic research is concerned. Due to the freedom of the internet, anyone can post almost anything that they want to, which means ensuring that the material found is legitimate can be a very difficult task. Academic schools use the internet as a fast way to communicate new ideas, and share any data they have collected on a particular subject. It is important to keep an eye out for the names of authors of information, as regular contributors to the subject can be trusted as experts.

The Internet is highly disorganized, in that web sites can appear, disappear, move or mutate on a daily basis. It can therefore be difficult to search, as the quality of the information available is not always sufficient, and anyone using the internet to research should make sure they keep a record of any literature, articles or web sites they use or quote. This is not only so that they can not be accused of plagiarism, but so that they can go back to their information quickly and easily, so saving time and effort. Not everything on the internet is academic; there is a fast growing trend for advertisers to use the World Wide Web as a promotional tool, since much of the information available may simply be advertising, rather than worthwhile and relevant material.

Not everything that is needed for research is available on the internet; there are plenty of topics where the internet will prove little help, and where text books / academic journals will be a greater research tool. That said, many books and journals are being transformed …

Computer Networking Simplified

So what is computer networking? To the uninitiated this term may sound intimidating but you may have already come across it or have even used it either at work or at home. For those new to computer networking, simply put, a network refers to a system where two or more computers are connected to each other. This is done so people can share things like information or computer hardware, like a printer for instance.

Now there are several things you need to set up a computer network. The most basic system consists of a protocol, NICs or network interface cards, cable and a hub.

A protocol is a set of rules that the computers have to follow in order for them to "speak the same language". For example, http is a protocol. If you want to be able to access a website from your computer that works on http, the website you are accessing must also operate on the same protocol otherwise you will not be able to read the site.

NICs are cards that you put at the back or side of a computer. This allows the computers to communicate with each other. A cable is simply a wire that connects the computers together and the hub is a device that controls traffic, for example, information that one computer sends to another.

Now this is a list of items for a standard network. You're going to need a different set of devices if you are going to go for wireless networking.

How does a computer network work? Let's say for instance, you want to send information from your desktop to your father's computer. The NIC on your PC transfers the file through the cable into the hub. The hub then transfers the data to your father's computer. If each of the units uses the same protocol then the information is accepted by your dad's computer and he will be able to open the file you just sent.

There are two types of networks: the LAN or local area network and the WAN or wide area network.

The LAN is a very simple type of network where all the units you connect are located in one place. There are two types of LAN, peer to peer and client server. A peer to peer network is where two or more computers are connected to each other directly. For example, computer 1 is connected to computer 2, computer 2 is connected to computer 3 and so on. The computers are dependent on each other so if one unit experiences problems, the others simply will not be able to connect to each other. The client server type is where all computers are connected to a main unit. This is more convenient because if one computer has problems, the others will not be affected. You will still be able to exchange data.

An example of a WAN is the internet. As you can see, this is a very large type of network allowing millions …

The Basics of Usenet Technology

Usenet technology can propagate anyone’s posting around the world in a very short amount of time, oftentimes within a day. This system is decentralized and relies on a network of servers that share information with one another at regular intervals. Everything that you post on the Usenet system is tagged with a unique ID number. This allows the servers to avoid copying the same information twice and, since the late 1970s, this system has proven itself as one of the most robust and adaptable of electronic communications designs.

Usenet involves a transaction between you and your news server at first. Normally, you would read a posting on a newsgroup and decide to respond to it. You do this from within your newsreader program. Once your post is finished and you’re ready to add it to the discussion, you send it to your server. Your server updates the appropriate newsgroup with your contribution and then, at regular intervals, sends its information to other servers. They, in turn, send their information to your server, which they have gotten from still other servers. Each server within the system represents a separate entity that has its own administrator. There is, however, no administrator for the system as a whole, nor is there one central server that could go down and stop the Usenet system.

Some servers are very large and act has hubs for the Usenet as a whole. If one of those servers crashed, however, the information would simply be passed along by different servers. Your ISP may provide you with access to a server or they may not. They’re not as commonly offered as a basic part of Internet service anymore and, for that reason, many people will have to use third-party access providers on the Internet to get service.

Newsreader programs are required to participate in Usenet newsgroups. These readers are sometimes included with free email programs. There are also paid versions of this software available that offer more features and other enhancements. Some readers also allow you to handle different types of files as the abilities of the Usenet have long ago become far more diverse than handling simple text posts. Usenet servers remain popular today with people in the scientific community, hobbyists and people who just like socializing with others online. It may be similar to Internet forums, but Usenet has a much different technology that drives it.…
