Government in the disputed region says restrictions ‘absolutely necessary in the interest of Indian sovereignty’.
The government in Indian-administered Kashmir has extended its ban on high-speed internet in 18 of 20 districts of the disputed region until November 12.
In an order issued on Wednesday evening, the administration in the federal territory said the restrictions on high-speed internet were “felt absolutely necessary in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India”.
High-speed internet in the Himalayan region had been cut off since last August, when India revoked the semi-autonomous status of the Jammu and Kashmir state, divided it into two federally ruled territories and imposed a complete lockdown and communications blackout.
The order said security agencies “apprehended that anti-national elements might misuse” high-speed connections “for carrying out activities inimical to the public order besides persuading the youths to join militancy”.
Although some of the communications restrictions have been removed
India’s smartphone shipments hit a record high in Q3 2020.
The news comes after a major drop of almost 50% in Q2.
Indian smartphone shipments dropped by almost 50% in Q2 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This made for historic lows in the market, but it looks like Q3 2020 has given us a record high.
Tracking firm Canalys reported that smartphone shipments in India reached 50 million units in Q3 2020. This is an all-time record according to the firm, growing 8% year-on-year. Back in Q3 2019, India reportedly saw shipments of 46.2 million units.
Canalys analyst Adwait Mardikar explained that reduced lockdown restrictions have “created the perfect atmosphere for sustained growth.” He added that online channels are also winning big with plenty of devices launching ahead of the festive season.
Canalys research analyst Varun Kannan also noted that Chinese brands accounted for 74% of Indian shipments
Amid a global anti-China sentiment, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani has found an American partner to execute his 5G ambitions.
On Oct. 21, Jio Platforms, the next-gen technology arm of Ambani’s Reliance Industries, said it is partnering with California-headquartered Qualcomm Technologies to “fast track the development and roll-out of indigenous 5G network infrastructure and services” in India.
Ambani had in July announced that Jio Platforms has developed a 5G solution in-house for India, which will be ready for field deployment in 2021. This made Jio Platforms the first-ever Indian company to have 5G capabilities.
Qualcomm is one of the world’s leading wireless technology firms, which works on the development, launch, and expansion of 5G. The company was possibly the obvious choice for Ambani given that most other leaders in 5G technology are Chinese, and India is in the middle of economic and political conflict with
