What startups can learn from the US Air Force’s computer modelling and simulation breakthrough

The machines our world relies on were once designed with whatever tools designers had — sketches, plans, slide rulers, and sometimes, just good old-fashioned guesswork.

Often, it wasn’t until something was actually built that designers could see if it actually worked as they had intended.

Advances in technologies, such as modelling and computer-aided design, helped creators get closer to reality with their designs, but an extensive testing and redesign phase was required for prototypes to pick up any issues before production began.

This could be a lengthy process, holding up advances in technology or technique for years until flaws were ironed out.

But the United States Air Force and the aircraft manufacturer Boeing have just changed the game completely, designing and testing a new jet trainer aircraft to operational level using just computer modelling and simulation.

MacBook Air, 13- and 16-inch MacBook Pro reportedly first Apple Silicon Macs

Apple’s first Apple Silicon Macs, set to make their debut at a recently announced Nov. 10 event, could include both sizes of MacBook Pro and a new MacBook Air.

The Cupertino tech giant announced the Nov. 10 “One more thing” event on Monday, and Apple Silicon Macs are almost certainly on the docket. Which specific Macs will be the first to receive Apple-designed processors is still unclear.

Beyond being equipped with a new Apple chip thought to be based on the A14, the new notebooks reportedly won’t see any other major design changes. The new Apple chips could boost power efficiency, performance, and integration with the company’s broader ecosystem, however.

Earlier on Monday, a prominent leaker hinted that the Apple event could see the debut of two new 13-inch MacBook models. In this case, those could be the smaller MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air.

MacBook Pro, Air laptops will get Apple Silicon CPUs first

Earlier today Apple announced its November 10th “One More Thing” event, and now we have a better idea of what we can expect to see from the company. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Debby Wu, the tech giant will detail three Apple Silicon-powered Macs next week, starting with new 13-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and followed by a new 13-inch MacBook Air. The refreshed laptops reportedly won’t feature updated designs, but they’ll include processors based on the A14 chipset that powers the company’s new iPhone 12 and iPad Air models.

Desktop Apple Silicon-powered Macs will follow at a later date, with Bloomberg reporting Apple is working on redesigned iMac and Mac Pro models. When it comes to the latter, the company is apparently working on a new design that is about half the size of the current Mac Pro. Interestingly, Bloomberg says it’s unsure if the new Mac Pro
