Quantum computing may make current encryption obsolete, a quantum internet could be the solution

“The quantum threat is basically going to destroy the security of networks as we know them today,” declared Bruno Huttner, who directs strategic quantum initiatives for Geneva, Switzerland-based ID Quantique. No other commercial organization since the turn of the century has been more directly involved in the development of science and working theories for the future quantum computer network.

One class of theory involves cryptographic security. The moment a quantum computer (QC) breaks through the dam currently held in place by public-key cryptography (PKC), every encrypted message in the world will become vulnerable. That’s Huttner’s “quantum threat.”

“A quantum-safe solution,” he continued, speaking to the Inside Quantum Technology Europe 2020 conference in late October, “can come in two very different aspects. Meet A Former Fighter Pilot, Current Autonomous Vehicles Road Warrior

As a tech investor, I get to talk to some intriguing people. But there’s one group that I think is really special. These are people who are supremely talented, endlessly curious, fanatically committed, and who are unconstrained by disciplinary boundaries. This combination of traits makes them uniquely well-suited to solve the world’s most critical and intractable problems. I’ve dubbed these individuals “missionary misfits,” and every few months, I’ll introduce readers to one of these extraordinary humans.

The first missionary misfit I’d like you to meet is Missy Cummings. Missy is a professor in Duke’s School of Engineering and the Duke Institute of Brain Sciences; she’s also the director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory and Duke Robotics. Her research centers on autonomous vehicles and the policy, ethical, and social impact of autonomous technologies.

Current Affairs: The Next American Economy by William Holstein Technology Clusters and Ecosystems

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an unemployment rate of 9.2 percent in June 2011. That number remains frustratingly consistent each month as millions of Americans struggle to find work.

It’s clear that many of the jobs lost over the last several decades, and during the Great Recession of 2008, are extinct. It’s said that the definition of insanity is repeatedly doing the same thing, yet hoping for different results.

Government stimulus packages and extended unemployment benefits are Band-aids for what, William Holstein, author of the new book, “The Next American Economy-A Blueprint for a Real Recovery,” identifies as structural challenges in America’s economy. Holstein has traveled the United States writing about globalization and economics for major business publications.

How will our country reinvent its workforce for the 21st century, and in what industries? Holstein believes our economic rebirth lies in technology clusters and ecosystems.

Following is a cross-sectional … Read More
