SoftBank Group said Monday its first-half net profit soared 346.7 percent, sealing a strong recovery after a massive annual loss, as tech stocks rally and the firm sheds assets to shore up its finances.
Net profit for the six months to September came to 1.88 trillion yen ($18 billion), up from 421.6 billion yen a year earlier, the Japanese conglomerate said.
The profit surge was mainly due to gains on its investments, which topped two trillion yen for the period.
SoftBank, however, said it would not offer a forecast “as it is difficult to foresee consolidated results due to numerous uncertain factors”.
SoftBank reported a nearly $9 billion net loss in the previous full fiscal year, but quickly returned to the black in the first quarter.

(RTTNews) – Internet Initiative Japan Inc. or IIJ (IIJIY), an Internet related network services provider, reported Monday that its first-half profit attributable to owners of the parent grew 57.7 percent to 43.8 percent to 2.77 billion Japanese yen from last year’s 1.76 billion yen.
Operating profit climbed 56.3 percent year-over-year to 5.24 billion yen.
Total revenues increased 2.5 percent to 101.67 billion yen from 99.22 billion yen a year ago.
Looking ahead for fiscal year ending March 31, 2021, the company now projects attributable profit of 6.1 billion yen, up 52.2 percent from last year, operating profit of 11.3 billion yen, up 37.4 percent from last year, and revenues of 212 billion yen, up 3.7 percent from the prior year.
The company previously expected attributable profit of 5 billion yen, operating profit of 8.70 billion yen, and revenues of 210 billion yen.
T-Mobile added a net total of more than 2 million customers in the third quarter, giving it more than 100 million customers for the first time.
The Bellevue, Wash.-based wireless company posted of revenue of $19.3 billion and profit of $1.3 billion, or $1 per share, topping Wall Street’s expectations by both measures. Analysts surveyed in advance of T-Mobile’s earnings release expected the company to post earnings of 43 cents/share on revenue of $18.34 billion.

TOKYO (AP) — Nintendo, the Japanese company behind Super Mario and Pokemon video games, reported Thursday that its fiscal first half profit more than tripled as passed time while stuck at home during the pandemic playing games.
Kyoto-based Nintendo Co.’s profit for the six months through September soared to 213 billion yen ($2 billion), up from 62 billion yen a year ago. Six-month sales soared to 769 billion yen ($7.4 billion) from 444 billion yen.
SK Telecom announced on Thursday it has posted operating income of 361.5 billion won and sales of 4.73 trillion won for the third quarter.
It is an increase of 19.7% and 3.7%, respectively, from the same quarter a year ago.
SK Telecom said its media, security, and commerce businesses combined contributed 1.52 trillion won in sales, which was nearly a 19% increase year-on-year.
The three businesses together also contributed 100 billion won in operating income, a rise of 40.3% year-on-year.
These businesses benefitted from the rise in demand for remote services in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, SK Telecom said.

The National Australia Bank (NAB) has ended the 2020 financial year with a near-50% drop in net profit but with a focus on digital, it looks to reap the rewards from its tech transformation project.
The red and black bank reported AU$2.56 billion in statutory net profit, down 47% from the AU$4.8 billion posted a year prior. Cash earnings were also down 37% to AU$3.7 billion, with business and private banking accounting for AU$2.5 billion of the total.
Revenue was also down 1.4%, mainly due to COVID-19-related fee waivers, NAB said.
Expenses rose 10.7% for the 12-month period, with NAB telling shareholders on Thursday this reflected costs associated with the implementation of its strategy refresh along with higher technology-related costs, including spend to strengthen the compliance and control framework, salary increases, and COVID-19 related costs.
