Opinion | What Biden needs to do to regulate the Internet both at home and worldwide

There is ample room for regulating the online realm domestically, though doing so may first require cooperating with a divided Congress. Reinstalling some form of the net neutrality regulations rolled back by the current Federal Communications Commission promises to prove controversial; expanding broadband access to low-income and rural households, on the other hand, should appeal to legislators mid-pandemic regardless of party. Just as high on the agenda ought to be forging a federal privacy framework at long last: A stalled-out effort in both legislative chambers could benefit from a jolt of jump-starting executive leadership. And then there’s the matter of reforming Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields websites from lawsuits for hosting illegal content.

These last two issues are obviously significant to American companies and civilians alike: What information can social media sites hoover up to serve targeted advertisements, and what should be off-limits? What forms of

Dallas ISD plans to build cell towers, pay for internet to help students

Almost none of the students at W. W. Samuell High School had access to district-issued laptops or internet hotspots in their homes just one year ago.

In what would now be viewed as a prescient decision, Principal Jennifer Tecklenburg started handing out Chromebooks to students in December so that every student could have a device to take home.

“It was an equity issue,” she said. “The students needed the technology at home as much as they needed it at school.”

Most of Samuell’s students had a device when the pandemic forced campuses in Dallas and across the country to close last March. But there was still the glaring issue of internet connectivity – what good was a laptop if a student didn’t have a Wi-Fi connection to use it on?

Students completed work on their phones, submitted assignments via text message or parked outside of libraries and restaurants to access

Dominion Voting Systems reacts to Sidney Powell election lawsuit

The company provided a bulleted list of claims it says were not true – from foreign ties to hackability.

DENVER — A company that has been named in numerous election fraud theories – many with little or no evidence to back them – has taken aim at comments from one of its biggest detractors.

Dominion Voting Systems, which maintains voting machines in Georgia and other states, laid out a long list of claims by attorney Sidney Powell which it said are false – and provably so.

The company described many of Powell’s statements as part of a “bizarre election fraud conspiracy” that would have required unreasonably coordinated actions between thousands of people from the state to the local level – including themselves.

“This quite simply did not occur,” the company said in a statement released on Thursday.

“The allegations included in the draft complaint are baseless, senseless, physically impossible, and

GLCF grant helps nonprofits improve virtual programming

LOWELL – Virtual well-baby visits for new moms and infants. Monitoring a nest of turtle eggs in the wild. Cooking videos led by a local nutritionist. Online nature walks with a botanical illustrator.

These are just a few examples of the new online programming local nonprofits have created, thanks to technical-training classes from Lowell TeleMedia Center, funded by a grant from the Greater Lowell Community Foundation.

Last spring, when the pandemic forced nonprofit organizations into lockdown mode, they moved their face-to-face programs online. However, as summer fast approached, many realized they needed help creating virtual programming to attract young people.

A baby Blanding’s turtle was hatched from a nest monitored by Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust as part of its virtual summer programming. The LPCT received LTC training to create virtual content as part of a grant from the Greater Lowell Community Foundation.COURTESY GLCF
